The rice whitening process
Whitening removes bran from brown rice to produce white rice. Control the result by the required degree of milling and preservation of kernels rather than appearance alone.

Input and output
Brown rice enters the stage. Whitened rice and removed bran leave through the intended outlets. The material balance should distinguish these outputs from rejects and unaccounted losses.
Machine used
A rice whitener provides abrasive or frictional treatment according to its design. A line may distribute the work between more than one stage; the arrangement and settings require equipment-specific documentation.
What to observe
| Observation | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Incoming material | Confirm the correct stream reaches the stage |
| Finished appearance | Check the specified milling requirement |
| Broken fraction | Track preservation of kernels |
| Temperature trend | Identify a change needing investigation |
| Bran stream | Help reconcile the batch balance |
Adjustment method
Establish a baseline, make one permitted adjustment, allow the process to stabilize and compare samples. Record both the setting and the result so the change can be evaluated later.
Common problems
Inconsistent appearance or increased breakage may involve feed variation, material condition or equipment condition. Compare adjacent process samples before attributing the result to a single setting.
Previous and next stages
Brown rice normally arrives from separation. Subsequent finishing and grading depend on the product specification. More treatment is not automatically the correct response to every visual defect.
