Rice whitener
A rice whitener removes bran from brown rice. Its operating balance affects appearance, bran removal and kernel breakage, so evaluate finished quality together with throughput.

Working principle
Whiteners use abrasive action, frictional action, or a combination to remove outer material. Grain movement and resistance inside the working chamber influence the treatment each kernel receives.
Main components
The functional system includes a feed path, working element, surrounding screen or chamber, bran outlet and discharge control. The exact geometry differs by design. Use the manufacturer’s drawing to identify the components on a particular machine.
Capacity and operating limits
Values vary by machine design and manufacturer. Compare published throughput only when the feed material, desired finish and measurement basis are stated. A paddy-input rating is not directly equivalent to a brown-rice-input rating.
Operating checks
- Confirm that the incoming stream is appropriate for the whitener.
- Record baseline feed, output and finished quality.
- Adjust only within the documented operating range.
- Compare samples after the process has stabilized.
Common problems
High breakage, inconsistent finish and abnormal temperature deserve separate investigation. Look for a change in incoming grain or feed conditions before assuming that the discharge control alone is responsible.
Maintenance and limitations
Inspect accessible condition indicators during operation; isolate before opening covers. Document screen wear and bran-path condition. Whitening cannot restore cracked kernels or remove every defect in the incoming batch.
Frequently asked questions
Is a whitener a polisher?
The terms are sometimes used loosely. Ask what material is removed and what finish the machine is intended to produce.
Check your batch with the milling yield calculator.
